The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) unveiled two new responsible gambling tools that problem gamblers can utilize to help keep them away from both brick-and-mortar and casino apps and sportsbooks.
The first is a dedicated toll-free hotline — 1-833-788-4DGE — to both learn about and initiate the self-exclusion process.
From there, gamblers in need can either set up an in-person meeting with a specially trained member of the DGE staff, or, in the second new tool, set up a video conference with DGE personnel to exclude themselves from online and/or in-person gambling.
Additionally, problem gamblers can exclude themselves from online gambling directly through an online application on the DGE website; however, a meeting is still required for those seeking to ban themselves from brick-and-mortar casinos.
‘Making our pioneering state the standard’
“New Jersey has always been a national leader in gaming, as the first to allow casino gambling outside Nevada and the first to launch Internet gaming. And we are now focusing on making our pioneering state the standard in responsible gaming practices,” Attorney General Matthew Platkin said in a press release highlighting the changes, which went into effect Monday. “The efforts announced today underscore our commitment to helping problem gamblers by expanding the entry points for self-exclusion and other methods to receive assistance.”
“We hope the new tools being unveiled today will help to further reduce the risk of problem gambling,” added DGE Director David Rebuck. “By promoting responsible gaming practices, we can help keep gaming an enjoyable and entertaining activity for all.”
Lastly, the DGE is also getting ready to debut an updated “Responsible Gaming” landing page on its website that will serve as a central location containing a variety of responsible gambling information, including:
- Self-exclusion information
- Annual reports by Rutgers University that examine the impact of internet gambling and sports wagering and analyze patterns of play across all players and bets during the year
- DGE’s responsible gambling best practices for operators
- DGE’s responsible gambling regulations
