BetMGM announced on Friday that it will launch a New York online sportsbook on Monday, coinciding with the final day of the opening round of the NFL playoffs.

With the launch, BetMGM will become the fifth sportsbook to go live with a mobile sports betting app in New York. On Saturday, four operators, BetRivers, Caesars SportsbookDraftKings, and FanDuel, rolled out New York-specific apps on the first day of mobile sports betting in the Empire State.

In November, BetMGM was one of nine companies that received a conditional license from the New York Gaming Commission for online sports wagering. BetMGM received the license through a so-called “super bid,” a consortium that also featured DraftKings, FanDuel, and Bally Bet.

“We look forward to offering customers in New York unique experiences that they can’t access on any other platform,” BetMGM CEO Adam Greenblatt said in a statement. “A huge thank you to the New York Gaming Commission, as well as to our entire BetMGM team who have worked tirelessly to bring this to fruition.”

Activations inside Madison Square Garden

Hours after the NYGC’s historic November announcement, BetMGM immediately swung into action securing a multi-year marketing partnership with MSG Sports and MSG Entertainment. Under the deal, BetMGM will receive considerable exposure for brand integration inside Madison Square Garden, including courtside and ribbon LED signage for home games of the NBA’s New York Knicks. The partnership also provides BetMGM with dasherboard signage and Zamboni branding at home games of the NHL’s New York Rangers.

“We’re thrilled to see the BetMGM brand connected to a space as iconic as Madison Square Garden,” BetMGM Chief Revenue Officer Matt Prevost said in November. “New York is a critical state for BetMGM’s continued growth and I can’t think of a better way to begin our relationship with The Empire State than partnering with ‘The World’s Most Famous Arena’ and their legendary team franchises.”

New York legalized mobile sports betting last April when negotiators from former Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s office and the New York Legislature agreed on a deal to include online sports wagering in the state’s 2022 Fiscal Year Budget. The two sides did not agree, however, on language that would have allowed professional sports teams to open a retail sportsbook inside their respective venues. As a result, MSG patrons will be limited to placing wagers on online devices inside the arena.

BetMGM will also face competition from rival Caesars Entertainment for customer activations. Approximately one week after MSG notched the partnership with BetMGM, MSG secured a separate marketing deal with Caesars. The deal enables Caesars to market its sports betting product to Knicks and Rangers fans inside the arena, through social media, and during game broadcasts featuring both teams.

Implications for Empire City Yonkers

In January 2019, MGM Resorts completed an $850 million purchase of Empire City Casino and Yonkers Raceway, a 97-acre property located about 13 miles north of Manhattan. MGM Resorts completed the transaction after receiving licensing approval from the NYGC for the operations of the facility’s video lottery terminals, as well as its harness racetrack. MGM Resorts confirmed last month that it submitted preliminary information in pursuing one of three downstate casino licenses to be awarded by the commission through a competitive bidding process.

“A full gaming license at Empire City Casino by MGM Resorts will be a game-changer for Westchester, the Bronx, and the state,” MGM Resorts said in a statement.

Last May, the New York Racing Association announced a partnership with BetMGM under which NYRA Bets became BetMGM’s first horse racing partner. The availability of sports betting, horse racing, and casino gaming from a central location could help MGM Resorts deliver on the company’s strategy of leveraging sports wagering to help bolster its omni-channel solutions.

BetMGM is a 50-50 joint venture between MGM Resorts and UK-based Entain. Upon Monday’s planned launch, BetMGM will enter its 19th U.S. state, a market it described on Friday as the venture’s “largest to date.”

As of Monday, the BetMGM app will be available for download in New York on both iOS and Android, BetMGM said. BetMGM’s online sports betting platform will also be accessible via desktop at BetMGM.com.
