BetStars Sportsbook NJ new player bonus

Much like sister brand PokerStars, BetStars NJ appears to place a strong emphasis on attracting new customers. When players place their first bet with BetStars, they’ll receive a full refund up to $500 if the bet loses. There is no promo code necessary to take advantage of this offer — just use any of the links found on this page to get started with the BetStars NJ registration process.

The main downside of this offer, if it can be called that, is that the player will not receive a bonus if their first wager wins — but of course, they’ll still receive their normal winnings from the bet. Also, be warned, the only bets eligible for this offer are straights and parlays, so if you’re looking to place a Spin & Bet or round robin as your first wager, think twice.

In a sort of irksome oddity, players that make their first deposit using Neteller or Skrill are not eligible for the refund. Why? Beats us. But at least there are no apparent odds restrictions on the wagers, so if you want to bet a big favorite or dog, that’s up to you. In either case, the free bet must be used within 7 days of being issued, or it expires.

Registering an account at BetStars Sportsbook NJ

Registering for an account through BetStars’ website is fairly simple, and really simple for those who have existing accounts with a TSG brand in NJ. Here’s a look at some basic eligibility requirements.

Who is eligible for an account?

Per New Jersey state law, a customer must be at least 21 years of age and be located in the state of New Jersey (NJ residency not required) in order to place a sports wager with a licensed, regulated sportsbook within the state.

Of course, you’ll have to actually prove you’re in New Jersey too, which is done by way of a geolocation services check, so be sure to allow BetStars NJ to know your location (mobile) and have WiFi or 4g enabled when you play. Desktop users may have to download a geolocation plugin and make use of a WiFi adapter to get started.

Note, you do not have pass a geolocation check to register an account, make a deposit, and perform other account management features. You’ll just have to wait until you cross the NJ border to plunk down a wager on your favorite team.

Signing up

Players that already have an account on PokerStars NJ, will be pleased to know that they’ll be able to skip the entire BetStars registration process, as their account info and wallet will be automatically linked.

For the rest of us common folk, a simple registration process is required. First, you’ll need to enter in a valid email address, and choose a username/password combo. At that point, you’ll have a free-money account, and won’t be required to enter any more info until you’re ready to deposit. So peruse away!

At the time of a first deposit, players will have to enter their depositing info and a little more about themselves, including their full name, date of birth, and the last four digits of their SSN.

New depositing players need to provide their SSN, but only the last four digits

Why the SSN? It’s so that the operator can verify that you are who you say you are, and is intended as a safeguard against identity theft and fraud. All regulated sites in New Jersey require this measure of added security.

Funding an account at BetStars Sportsbook NJ

BetStars’ customers can fund their accounts using a desktop cashier or a mobile cashier available on both Android and iOS devices. BetStars accepts a minimum deposit of $10 in most cases, unless otherwise stated.

Deposits

A plethora of deposits options exist, including:

  • Instant eChecks (electronic funds transfer)
  • PayPal
  • Neteller
  • Skrill
  • PayNearMe at 7-Eleven and CVS Pharmacy stores
  • Cash at the Resorts AC casino cage

In addition, customers have the option of making deposits through PokerStars Play+ Card, a prepaid card account, which we find to be a solid backup option in case an Instant eChecks transfer fails.

User accounts are also linked to Stars Transfer, a secure payment method that enables users to transfer funds directly from their bank account. A number of major financial institutions participate in Stars Transfer, including Bank of America, Wells Fargo and Capital One. Typically the general rule is if the bank allows you to enable Online Bill Pay, then it supports Stars Transfers.

Customers making cash deposits at the Resorts casino cage are required to provide a photo ID (state drivers’ license, passport etc.) and confirm the final four digits of their social security number.

We must note that there are an abundance of little annoyances associated with loading money on to BetStars NJ. For one, there were instances where we tried to deposit more than the maximum, and had to wait 5-10 minutes to try again. And speaking of the maximum deposit amounts, they’re low, or at least they’re low until you request a higher limit.

We also experienced some trouble with setting up and using the PokerStars Play+ card and cash at the cage options. Disappointing.

Withdrawals

With the exceptions of PayNearMe, Stars Transfer, and MasterCard, all depositing methods are also available for withdrawals. Yes, that includes Visa.

There are some deep caveats involved, however.

First off, BetStars NJ automatically credits withdrawals back to the method used for deposits, up to the amount deposited. This is done on a first-in, first-out basis with a customer’s most recent deposit returned last. In addition, Instant eChecks withdrawals take precedence over Neteller and Skrill, and those over PayPal. Sound overly confusing and restrictive? It is, and may result in your withdrawals being allocated all over the place.

On the bright side, winners can choose where to withdraw any funds above the deposit amount. That, and for transactions involving Neteller, Skrill, and PayPal, automatic withdrawals will appear in a customer’s account immediately. Instant eCheck withdrawals, by contrast, typically take a couple of days to hit bank accounts.

One issue we ran into was that if we made an Instant eCheck (ACH) deposit, and made a quick score and tried to cash out, we noticed we could only withdraw our winnings immediately, and the initial deposit amount some days later. BetStars NJ is the only NJ online sportsbook that we know of that enforces this sort of “check clearing” policy.

Withdrawals processed through the Resorts Casino cage are usually completed within a period of two hours, according to the company, while withdrawals through the PokerStars Play+ Card are processed within 72 hours.

Software

BetStars’ software platform is powered by Amelco, a U.K.-based technology provider that reaffirmed its partnership with The Stars Group in May 2018. Upon the company’s New Jersey launch in September 2018, BetStars rolled out its mobile app before unveiling a desktop platform earlier this year.

Free from complexities that encumber other sports betting sites, BetStars’ platform enables customers to place bets in a simple, efficient manner.

The BetStars NJ homepage is a delight, showcasing highlighted games, odds boosts, and upcoming games, the latter of which is sorted tabularly by market. Below the upcoming wagers, in-game matches are displayed, also broken out by tabs, with each in-game match displaying both the current score and time remaining.

BetStars NJ interface
The BetStars NJ interface is beautiful. Download the desktop app for even faster responsiveness.

To the side are a list of BetStars’ most prominent promotions and a list of trending bets. Despite all the different displays the interface never feels cluttered on desktop, and the vibrant aesthetics, amazing responsiveness, and intuitive bet slip complete what is nothing less than an awesome first impression.

Digging a little bit deeper, we find tons of nice little touches that other NJ online sportsbooks would be wise to incorporate. For instance, when clicking on an in-game match, the interface displays all live betting games (and match details) for that market in a sidebar. Players can also filter through recent results, whether they bet on the game or not. Futures are neatly categorized in their own sub-tab. These little quality-of-life enhancements can be found just about everywhere and are too numerous to completely cover. Explore and have fun.

Finally, BetStars NJ is available via a browser-based console but also as part of a downloadable app that packages the sportsbook alongside PokerStars’ poker and casino sites. The trio share a single wallet, making for a very smooth transition from vertical to vertical.

BetStars mobile app

The BetStars NJ app is available for both Android and iOS smartphone and tablet devices, and as long as your phone doesn’t flip open, the software should sing.

Rarely will we say that we had a better experience playing on mobile v. desktop, as it’s sort of assumed there’s going to be a tradeoff between quality and convenience, but in this instance, the mobile app may be superior.

BetStars NJ on Android

The app features the same sleek, glossy interface that is both visually appealing and easy to use. And like the desktop platform, customers on the go can follow live action with an interactive feature that provides instantaneous updates on dozens of markets. Just as an example, with European soccer matches, the feature informs bettors on the result of the last shot on goal, as well as other critical information such as yellow card accumulation, fouls and offsides per team.

The tabular structure is relied on even more heavily on mobile, to reduce sensory overload, and it works. All account management features (and there are many) are neatly tucked away in a sleek looking side menu, that also grants players one-click access to the poker room and casino. Numerous customization options are available from the Settings & Tools menu, including the most robust Responsible Gambling menu we’ve witnessed in the market.

Our one grievance is that the bet slip icon is really small and players may not initially see it. But this is a one-time inconvenience, and the contents of the bet slip itself are still amazing.

How is the pricing?

In many respects, the pricing at BetStars mirrors many of the top books in the NJ sports betting market. Spread and totals typically adhere to the -110 standard. With moneylines there is occasionally good value to be had, but for the most part moneyline odds trend below the market consensus. The pricing trends underscore the importance of shopping around with a number of sportsbooks when pursuing the most favorable odds.

Parlay pricing was about par, with odds of +264 on 2-leggers (-110 each), and +596 on 3-leggers. However, when we submitted a 3-legger, we were happily informed that our bet was eligible for a 5% payout boost, and if we added another leg, the payout boost would jump to 7.5%. Given this, we were more enticed to swing for the fences on BetStars NJ than most other sportsbooks.

BetStars NJ doesn’t necessarily offer the best odds on futures, but they’re worth checking out, if only because it does tend to go against the grain a bit more than others. So while pricing on some teams will be significantly worse compared to other sites, the inverse is also true.

BetStars doesn’t do two-way props, which is absolutely confounding (or maybe not, considering most prop value is in the under). Instead all of its one-way over props are categorized as Odds Boosts. For what it’s worth, the site does offer a considerable amount of these, and at least some appear to boast good value.

For instance, BetStars’ odds of +700 on Sony Michel to score Super Bowl LIII’s first touchdown compared favorably to its rivals at other books. And while several books accepted more than $100,000 overall in wagers on the coin toss, BetStars was one of the only operators to offer the prop without a vigorish.

The site also offers a plethora of derivative bets (1st half, 1st quarter, 3rd period etc.) and alternative spreads. The value on these are generally pretty poor, however, with way too many 40 – 45 cent lines for us to feel good about them.

BetStars Sportsbook betting options

With lines at BetStars for more than a dozen pro and college leagues worldwide, there is no shortage of bets available for experienced and nascent bettors alike.

But that’s hardly to say BetStars NJ offers the most comprehensive betting menu; far from it.

Markets

It should come as little surprise that BetStars has hundreds of marketplaces featuring all four of the major professional sports leagues in North America.

Though bettors can wager on the NFL and NCAA college football on BetStars, the site currently does not offer action on the Alliance of American Football.

In basketball, patrons can choose from a vast menu of offerings from the NBA, NCAA college basketball and the Euroleague. It’s all fairly par for the course, but it’s at least worth noting that BetStars does offer an above average number of markets on Euroleague bets, relative to the industry. For instance, bettors interested in a tilt between Maccabi Tel Aviv and Olimpia Milan may have the opportunity to wager on 30+ distinct markets, ranging from spread and moneyline wagers to selections on quarterly, first and second half bets.

Besides the mainstream sports, BetStars’ oddsmakers have set lines on a host of less heralded, niche leagues. A sophisticated bettor has the option of placing wagers on a diverse assortment of global sports events from darts to cricket, as well as cycling and rugby.

BetStars NJ also hasn’t shied away from non-sports bets. After the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement authorized operators to begin accepting wagers on the Academy Awards, BetStars became one of the books statewide to join the fray.

Game selection at BetStars NJ Sportsbook

Game selection is a very mixed bag on BetStars NJ.

The common fare like point spreads, totals, moneylines, and parlays are all covered in spades. And BetStars NJ does offer a plentiful amount of derivative and alternative spread bets.

Going further, BetStars offers an above par number of in-play games, and even supports a nuance that is completely unique to the market: Spin & Bet. This format was clearly designed with the action junkie in mind, as it permits bettors to gamble on a chance to enhance the odds of their bet, up to 10x.

But we couldn’t help but notice that for the average professional league game, BetStars NJ offers betting markets that number in the dozens, and not the hundreds like some of the industry’s major players. The main reason for this is that, as mentioned previously, the sportsbook doesn’t offer two-way props. Going further, the number of one-way props it offers per contest is usually limited to less than 10. These bets all fall under the category Odds Boosts, which as the name implies, are meant to incentivize customers with attractive lines for a multitude of sports at higher odds than usual.

A few examples:

  • A unique odds boost for NBA games may feature a 2-team parlay for certain contests. If you think that the Hornets will defeat the Magic and Kemba Walker will score over 28.5 points, BetStars will give you odds of +280. On the other hand, a wager on an Orlando victory in combination with a 25-point night from Aaron Gordon might carry boosted odds of +550.
  • Boosted odds in hockey are available for customers who are confident that a player on a winning team will record a goal. A Golden Knights’ fan might receive +300 on a wager that Jonathan Marchessault will score a goal and the Knights will prevail over the Maple Leafs.
  • One odds boost in football returned a winning ticket for customers in the 2018-19 NFC Championship when Todd Gurley scored a touchdown in the Rams’ overtime victory over the Saints. A Gurley touchdown, coupled with a Rams win paid odds of +260.

It’s a nice feature, but hardly replaces having a full palette of two-way props.

Another annoyance is the absence of teaser bets. Yes, players can sort of make their own teasers by parlaying alternative spreads, but that’s probably a greater effort than most will want to expend.

BetStars NJ Alt Spreads
Alt. spreads can be used to create a teaser, sort of.

On a more positive note round robin betting is available, as are futures, special parlay cards, and lastly, cash outs. Although not exactly distinct to BetStars, cash outs are a nice touch in that they allow bettors to lock up their winnings (or hedge their losses) on straight and parlay bets. Cash out amounts are a reflection on in-game betting odds. So if the Warriors (-10) are only up by two in the early 4th quarter, bettors that cash out might expect to take a moderate, but not full, hit.

Players can also cash out before a game begins, which is handy if they made a mistake or inadvertently added an extra 0 to their bet slip where there shouldn’t have been one. Of course, in this instance, BetStars NJ charges a vig for the luxury of bailing out early.

Promotions and loyalty program

BetStars offers customers a bevy of promotions, providing a decent incentive for clients to return to the site on a daily basis. For bettors who take advantage of BetStars’ Tuesday Happy Hour promotion, the company will dole out a free wager of up to $100 over the hour-long period. The customers must place a qualifying bet between 6:00 pm and 7:00 pm on Tuesday nights to qualify for the giveaway.

Other promotional types include:

  • Free bets: For example, BetStars may provide customers with something like a $50 in-game free bet for NBA games on the evening’s slate, pending of course they make a qualifying wager at minimum odds of -110 of at least $50 on a selected NBA contest during the pre-game betting window.
  • Super Boosts: These are essentially Odds Boosts that are focused around single or parlayed major market games.
  • Parlay enhanced payouts: Separately, customers that wager on parlays featuring three selections or more are guaranteed of receiving an additional bonus from BetStars. A bettor that hits a 3-team parlay is eligible for a bonus as high as 5%, according to BetStars’ in-house rules, while a patron that nails an 8-team parlay could receive a bonus of as much as 25% of the initial wager.
  • Insurance: In the instance that a sure win ends up cascading into a devastating loss, BetStars NJ may offer a refund as a free bet up to a certain amount.

Overall the value of BetStars NJ’s aren’t exactly tremendous, but its recurrent offers combined with its generous first-time deposit bonus, elevate it into the vicinity of worthwhile.

BetStars also participates in Stars Rewards, a multi-faceted loyalty program that spans poker, casino, and sports. While the intricacies of the program are vast, in essence, players earn points for wagers placed on sports, that contribute to filling up a bar.

Once the requirements are met, they’ll win a chest, which will inhabit randomized and personalized rewards ranging from free bets, to straight up cash, and StarsCoins that can be spent at the BetStars rewards store. All in all, the monetary value of these rewards is usually nothing special, but they do add up over time, and players will occasionally win something big.
