Sports bettors who prefer to wager with DraftKings in New York have faced a daunting trip of almost 300 miles since 2019 from, say, Times Square to the Del Lago Casino retail sportsbook in Waterloo in the Syracuse area. But that all is changing now that DraftKings has become one of the first four mobile sportsbooks to debut in the state. Bettors can simply log on to the DraftKings app on their smartphone, make an initial deposit, and Gamble On.

FanDuel, Caesars, and BetRivers have also been cleared to launch in New York as soon as 9 a.m. on  Saturday, while Bally Bet, BetMGM, PointsBet, Resorts World, and WynnBET likely will launch in the coming weeks.

In the 14 states where DraftKings was live on Friday, would-be bettors were enticed with a “Get a 25% Profit Boost on any First Basket Scorer!” offer for bets up to $25, as well as “College Basketball Parlay Insurance — Close But No Cigar. Place a 4+ leg College Basketball parlay and if exactly 1 leg loses, get your bet back up to $10!”

There also is a promotion of “Refer a Friend, and you both get a free bet up to $100!” once the friend makes a deposit into a new account. A “How To Bet” feature includes a “Learn the Lingo” section for those first dipping their toes into these gambling waters.

The “A To Z” list of sports betting options is nearly just that, beginning with Australian Rules Football and going right on down to Volleyball. More than 20 different sports are on the menu.

In-person option remains in play

For those interested in a communal experience at the DraftKings book at Del Lago, it’s a 6,000-square-foot space with more than 1,000 square feet of LED video screens, including 16 single bay TV sets, odds boards, and a scrolling ticker that shows live score updates, stats, injury news, and additional player information. There are five ticket windows and 23 self-service betting kiosks.

A full-service bar and restaurant includes menu options such as chicken tenders and wings, flatbread pizzas, burgers, pulled pork sliders, and salads. Meanwhile, DraftKings’ app in New York will be the same as the one that New Jersey and Pennsylvania residents already use.

Another example of DraftKings’ previous presence in New York is its existing deal with the New York Rangers and New York Knicks as both sports betting and daily fantasy sports partners. The company also has a presence on the seven video boards on the exterior of Madison Square Garden.
