Kentucky Derby contenders

Among the field of twenty horses set to compete in this year’s Kentucky Derby, only six of them clock in with odds of 12-1 or shorter. These are the Kentucky Derby betting favorites:

Zandon (3-1)

Following Monday’s post position draw, Zandon has emerged as the odds-on favorite to win the Kentucky Derby in 2022. The Chad Brown trainee made waves back in early April when he secured a first place finish at the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland, thus locking up an opportunity to compete in this year’s Derby. The three-year-old will be entering uncharted waters as he looks to become the first Blue Grass Stakes participant to win the Kentucky Derby since Street Sense accomplished the feat back in 2007.

Epicenter (7-2)

Coming in just behind Zandon at 7-2 is none other than Epicenter, a bay-colored colt who picked up a pair of first place finishes in each of his last two races, the TwinSpires.com Louisana Derby and the Risen Star Stakes at Fair Grounds. Led by Steven Asmussen, the winningest trainer in the history of thoroughbred racing, Epicenter will look to deliver on Saturday and hopefully land Asmussen that elusive first Kentucky Derby title – it remains the only leg of the Triple Crown that the legendary trainer has yet to win in his storied career.

Messier (8-1)

Coming in next at 8-1 is Messier, one of two Derby contenders competing under trainer Tim Yakteen. Yakteen takes the place of the suspended six-time Derby winner Bob Baffert, who is banned from Churchill Downs until the middle of 2023. Both Messier and Taiba, Yakteen’s other Derby participant, were transferred to the trainer right before the 2022 Santa Anita Derby in order to give each horse an opportunity to qualify for the Kentucky Derby despite Baffert’s suspension. They did just that, as Taiba took first place followed by Messier, who finished second.

Mo Donegal (10-1)

Fresh off a first place finish at the Wood Memorial Stakes on April 9th, Mo Donegal is receiving his fair share of hype ahead of this year’s Kentucky Derby, and for good reason. Hailing from the same bloodline as 2016 Derby winner Nyquist and trained by two-time Derby champion Todd Pletcher, the value is through the roof here at 10-1. And if you needed any more reason to consider selecting Mo, the thoroughbred actually edged out 2022 Derby favorite Zandon at the Remsen Stakes on December 4th, 2021, taking first place.

White Abarrio (10-1)

Also coming in at 10-1 is White Abarrio, a gray-colored thoroughbred trained by Saffie A. Joseph Jr. Born in Kentucky in 2019, White Abarrio will get another chance to win on his own home turf following a third place finish at the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes in his first go-around at Churchill Downs on November 27, 2021. Since that race, White Abarrio is undefeated in 2022 after a pair of first place finishes at Gulfstream Park and will look to carry his momentum into the Kentucky Derby.

Taiba (12-1)

Despite being listed among the favorites for this year’s Derby, Taiba will enter the competition with very little racing experience. After being sold for a whopping $1.7 million at two years old, Taiba got off to a hot start by winning his debut on March 5th followed by the aforementioned first place finish at the 2022 Santa Anita Derby. The potential is certainly there, but it’s also important to keep in mind that Saturday’s race will mark just the third career start for the chestnut-colored colt.

Kentucky Derby predictions

While the field appears to be wide open as always, there are a few horses that might have an edge over the rest of the pack. Whether it has to do with trainer or jockey history, recent results or improvement, or just raw potential, everyone has different reasons for selecting their Kentucky Derby darts each and every year. Let’s get into some of our predictions for this year’s event.

Baffert strikes back

It’s always important to address the elephant in the room, and that elephant is none other than Bob Baffert, the six-time Kentucky Derby champion and iconic trainer who is currently serving a two-year suspension issued by Churchill Downs. The suspension was the result of multiple failed drug tests by Baffert’s horses, including the disqualified 2021 Kentucky Derby winner, Medina Spirit. The horse has since passed away and been stripped of its title, however at the time, Baffert was in position to capture his third Kentucky Derby title in his last four attempts.

Baffert’s Justify secured a Derby win back in 2018 and his Authentic did the same in 2020. Baffert fell short in 2019, but had two horses finish in the Top 5 with Improbable and Game Winner. After Medina Spirit’s performance last year, it’s fair to assume that a Baffert-trained horse will be in the mix once again – and bettors have two options to choose from in Messier (8-1) and Taiba (12-1).

The biggest kicker here, of course, is that Baffert himself will not be involved in the actual race as Tim Yakteen will be running the show in his absence. Despite this, Baffert did play a major role in raising both colts and getting them up to speed to eventually compete in the sport’s biggest event, and history suggests that any horse hailing from the Baffert pipeline is probably a pretty good bet.

Prediction: Messier (8-1) or Taiba (12-1)

Make Uncle Mo proud

Led by two-time Kentucky Derby champion trainer Todd Pletcher, Mo Donegal is definitely flying under the radar at 10-1. One of Pletcher’s two Derby victories came back in 2010, courtesy of Super Saver. This was right after Uncle Mo, the favorite to win the Kentucky Derby in 2010, fell ill and was unable to compete. Although he couldn’t perform himself, Uncle Mo went on to sire 2016 Derby winner Nyquist, and now the torch will be passed to another one of his sons in Mo Donegal.

It would only make sense that Mo Donegal, named after Uncle Mo, wins the Kentucky Derby under the same trainer, twelve years after his father was unable to do so. Their bloodline definitely has the track record to trust Mo Donegal at 10-1, but there’s also another angle many are overlooking ahead of Saturday’s race. Back on December 4th, 2021, Mo Donegal actually edged out current Derby favorite Zandon (3-1) in a photo finish to take first place at the Remsen Stakes at Aqueduct Racetrack. Mo Donegal has already proven he can hang with the best of them, and should be able to do so at this year’s Kentucky Derby.

Prediction: Mo Donegal (10-1)

Charge It makes a charge!

For those who want to back Todd Pletcher in this year’s Derby but may be weary of Mo Donegal’s No. 1 post position, Charge It is another fantastic option with much longer odds at 20-1. The cause for concern when it comes to running out of the No. 1 gate is that the position has produced just one Kentucky Derby winner since 1963, when Ferdinand captured the title in 1986 running out of the No. 1 slot.

With that being said, Charge It is garnering a lot of interest from industry experts and looks to be a worthy long-shot selection for Saturday’s festivities. Backed by Pletcher and jockey Luis Saez, the rider of 2021 Belmont Stakes champion Essential Quality, Charge It appears to have the proper personnel to pull off a major upset this weekend. Saez also led Essential Quality to a first-place finish in the 2021 Travers Stakes at Saratoga

Prediction: Charge It (20-1)

DRF

We clearly saved the best for last, as The Daily Racing Form’s mobile betting arm is offering all new users the chance to start betting with a bankroll of $500 when they deposit just $250!

All new users will have the option to collect a 100% deposit match worth up to $250! Furthermore, any deposit match bonus funds will also expire if unused after fourteen (14) days. Lastly, any and all bonus funds must be wagered at least once before they will be cleared for withdrawal. For example, if a player took advantage of the entire $250 deposit match bonus, then they must wager at least $500 in order to be able to extract any remaining funds.

Oh yeah! As an added bonus, all new players who claim this offer will also start off with 10 Free Formulator PPs already loaded into their new account! DRF really stepped up to the plate with this welcome package, and we recommend taking advantage.

Kentucky Derby

Different types of Kentucky Derby betting

Much like any other horse racing event, there are tons of different ways to wager on The Kentucky Derby. Once you’ve sorted out your state-related specifications and selected your operator of choice, it’s time to get into some actual wagers. Horse betting terms may seem like a bit much at first, but they’re really quite simple:

  • Win: Bet on a horse to win if you think they will finish in first place.
  • Place: Betting on a horse to place allows the bettor to cash their ticket as long as their horse finishes in first or second place.
  • Show: The payout will be slightly reduced, but betting on a horse to show will win as long as your horse finishes first, second, or third.
  • Exacta: Pick the first and second place finishers correctly, in that exact order
  • Quinella: Pick the first and second place finishers, order does not matter
  • Trifecta: Pick the first, second, and third place finishers correctly, in that exact order
  • Superfecta: Pick the first, second, third, and fourth place finishers correctly, in that exact order
  • Super Hi-Five: Pick the firstsecondthird, fourth, and fifth finishers correctly, in that exact order

Bettors will also have the option to pair up their Kentucky Derby selections with picks from any of the other thirteen races occurring on Saturday:

  • Double: Pick the first place winner in back-to-back races
  • Pick 3: Pick the first place winner in three consecutive races
  • Pick 4: Pick the first place winner in four consecutive races
  • Pick 5: Pick the first place winner in five consecutive races
  • Pick 6: Pick the first place winner in six consecutive races

Kentucky Derby 2021 results

The 147th running of the Kentucky Derby was not short on drama, as Medina Spirit, the race’s winner at the time, was stripped of his title after testing positive for betamethasone shortly after the event. The Class C drug is technically permitted for therapeutic use among horses, but does require a 14-day withdrawal period and is considered a violation if discovered in any post-race tests.

Medina Spirit’s victory would’ve marked legendary trainer Bob Baffert’s record seventh Kentucky Derby title, breaking a current tie with Ben A. Jones. The win also would’ve bumped jockey John Velazquez into a tie with Bill Shoemaker for the second-most Derby wins in history for a jockey with four. Instead, Medina Spirit was officially disqualified on February 21, 2022, and Mandaloun was named the race’s winner as a result.

The disqualification of Medina Spirit not only affected the legacies of Baffert and Velazquez, but also catapulted trainer Brad Cox to this second career American Classic win after also winning the 2021 Belmont Stakes. As for jockey Florent Geroux, the result marked the first ever American Classic win in the 35-year-old’s lengthy career.

Unfortunately, Medina Spirit passed away on December 6th, 2021 at just three years old due to a sudden heart attack while training at Santa Anita Park in California.

History of the Kentucky Derby

There is no question that the Kentucky Derby is one of the most recognizable, iconic events in the history of the United States. The race was inaugurated on May 17, 1875 and has typically occurred on the first Saturday in May for the past 146 years. A staple in both American and sports culture, “The Run for the Roses” has been taking place at the famous Churchill Downs Racetrack in Louisville, Kentucky since its initial run and the tradition continues to live on to this day. The race extends for one and a quarter miles on dirt and only allows three-year-old thoroughbreds to compete.

The Kentucky Derby’s first ever winner was a colt named Aristides, ridden by jockey Oliver Lewis and trained by Hall of Famer Ansel Williamson. Following the inaugural Derby, various thoroughbred owners decided to send their successful horses to compete in two other competitions, the Preakness Stakes at the Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland and the Belmont Stakes in Elmont, New York.

In 1919, a horse by the name of Sir Barton became the first ever to pull off a clean sweep of the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes, in what would later be known as the Triple Crown, or the greatest accomplishment in the sport of horse racing. The term ‘Triple Crown’ wouldn’t be recognized in mainstream media until sportswriter Charles Hatton used the phrase to describe Gallant Fox’s 1930 sweep that marked just the second Triple Crown winner in history, at the time.

Since Sir Barton and Gallant Fox first set the standard for greatness, eleven more horses have locked up a Triple Crown. Omaha (1935), War Admiral (1937), Whirlaway (1941), Count Fleet (1943), Assault (1946), Citation (1948), Secretariat (1973), Seattle Slew (1977), and Affirmed (1978) were the only Triple Crown winners in history until American Pharaoh (2015) and Justify (2018) became the first horses this century to accomplish the historic feat.

After the 2020 Kentucky Derby was rescheduled to September due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the race extended its ongoing streak of running uninterrupted every year since the inaugural race in 1875. Among the three Triple Crown races going, the Derby remains the only one to do so.
