Which New Jersey Online Casinos are Legal?

New Jersey is home to a healthy online casino scene with more than 20 operators currently live in the state. Every NJ brick-and-mortar casino is eligible for an online gaming license, and is permitted to host numerous online skins on that license. We’ve included a table below listing them all so you can find the best NJ casino apps.

Below that, we break down the New Jersey online casino landscape by licensee and then list the online brands hosted on each license.

Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa

borgata casino nj

The Borgata has been the marquee property in Atlantic City since it first opened in 2003. Located on the marina, away from the famed boardwalk, the Borgata’s modern Tuscany theme exudes class and luxury. Currently owned and operated as an MGM property, the Borgata was among the first casinos in the state to attain an online gaming license, and currently hosts five active online casino skins on that license. They are:

In addition, on the same license, the Borgata hosts numerous online poker platforms including Borgata Poker, PartyPoker NJ and BetMGM Poker. The Borgata also holds a separate license to offer online sports betting, hosting its own Borgata Online Sportsbook.

Caesars Atlantic City

Caesars is one of the largest names in casino gaming and maintains three casinos in the Atlantic City area: Caesars AC, Harrah’s AC, and the Tropicana AC. Caesars’ online license is held under the Caesars Interactive Entertainment Inc. name, which is a separate company that was established to house all of its online gaming products. Caesars’ previous online casino platform was licensed and ready to go on Day 1 of online casino gaming in the state before rebranding its name to Caesars Palace Online Casino (and officially launching this change) on August 17, 2023. Currently, the leading platform hosts the following casino skins on its gaming license:

Like the Borgata, Caesars Palace Online Casino has also expanded its operation to include online poker, hosting the WSOP.com and 888 Poker sites. Caesars has online sportsbooks as well, including its namesake Caesars Online Sportsbook, on a separate license.

Golden Nugget Hotel Casino & Marina

Golden Nugget casino The Golden Nugget has been a fixture on Fremont Street in Las Vegas since 1946, but waited patiently for the right opportunity to expand east. In 2011, Golden Nugget purchased the bankrupt Trump Marina property to serve as its hub for east coast operations and New Jersey online gaming. It underwent an expensive renovation and by Spring 2012 had cemented itself as a premier AC destination. The Golden Nugget acquired an NJ online casino license and has been a major player since the industry launched in 2013. It currently hosts four online casino skins:

Despite leaving the gate a little slowly, the Golden Nugget Online Casino, and the other skins on its license, have grown to become some of the most successful in the state. The Golden Nugget does not currently host any online poker skins, though it did acquire a sports betting license and is currently home to multiple online sportsbooks.

Hard Rock Hotel and Casino

The Hard Rock is a relative newcomer to the AC boardwalk, but has made significant waves over a short period of time. In 2017, Hard Rock purchased the defunct Trump Taj Mahal property which had been a fixture in the city since it first opened in the early 90s. After renovations were completed, it opened for business in June 2018. After acquiring the necessary permits, online operations began shortly after. The Hard Rock currently hosts the following skins on its license:

  • Hard Rock Casino – Launch 6/28/18
  • Bet365 Casino – Launch 8/6/2019

Amongst the Hard Rock’s casino partners are established, world-renowned brands including Bet365, who brings more than 20 years of online gaming experience to the table. The Hard Rock also acquired a sports betting license and commenced sportsbook operations in 2019, hosting several skins for sports as well.

Ocean Resort Casino

The Ocean Resort was originally constructed in 2012, at the cost of more than $2 billion, opening under the Revel Casino name. However, the Revel’s run as Atlantic City’s hottest new property was short-lived. It filed for bankruptcy and closed in 2014. After seeing multiple owners in the following years, it was last sold in 2018, and promptly re-opened as the Ocean Resort Casino later that year.

In addition to its own online casino, Ocean has partnered with Parx Casino, the top Pennsylvania casino, to serve as its online host in New Jersey. In March 2022, Parx unveiled its brand new, redesigned mobile app and website, betPARX, in both NJ and PA. On top of betPARX, Ocean also began hosting Tipico Casino on its license in November 2021.

  • Ocean Online Casino – Launch 7/11/2018
  • betPARX – Original launch 10/9/2019, betPARX launch on 3/16/2022
  • Tipico Casino – Launch on 11/3/2021

Ocean also expanded its online operations to include a sportsbook, partnering with UK giant William Hill. William Hill would later merge and rebrand to Caesars Sportsbook.

Resorts Casino Hotel Atlantic City

The very first brick-and-mortar casino to open in Atlantic City is still very much alive and kicking today. Having served AC gamblers for more than 40 years, Resorts has been increasingly successful in adapting to the new, online landscape in the state. After the launch of online gaming in New Jersey, it agreed to partnerships with several prominent, established operators. On its online casino license it currently hosts:

On top of housing its online casino, Resorts is also home to the poker platform for PokerStars NJ, the biggest name in the game. Resorts also purchased a sports betting license where it houses sites like FOX Bet and DraftKings Online Sportsbook.

Tropicana Casino & Resort Atlantic City

tropicana casino nj Another AC staple, the Trop has been operating its retail casino and hotel on the boardwalk since 1981. The Tropicana previously hosted Virgin Casino under its license, but the brand has since shifted to Bally’s license instead. That being said, the only casino brand operating under the Trop’s online license is its very own:

  • Tropicana Casino – Launch 11/26/2013

Bally’s Atlantic City

After many years of struggling to survive in AC’s packed casino industry, Bally’s Casino was sold to Twin River Worldwide Holdings in 2020 for a whopping $25 million. The company also purchased the Bally’s name and set out to reignite the brand in Atlantic City. After more than $100 million in renovations, the property finally reopened for business under its new ownership on May 27, 2022.

As a result of the sale, Bally’s Corporation applied for a full NJ gaming license and was unanimously approved on August 17, 2021 to begin hosting online skins. Virgin Casino first made the switch over from Tropicana’s license and is joined by PointsBet and Bally’s very own mobile casino arm:

Who is Eligible to Play?

There are just a couple of restrictions on who can play online casino games in the state of New Jersey, both of which are pretty simple to satisfy:

  • Age: 21+. Just like a brick-and-mortar casino in the state, in order to gamble with an online casino you must be at least 21 years of age or older.
  • Physical Location: You must be within the New Jersey state boundaries in order to gamble with an online casino. It doesn’t matter if you live there, if you’re stuck in traffic on the Turnpike (as a passenger!), or just crossed the Hudson, leaving NYC. As long as you’re currently located in the state, you can play. NJ online casinos utilize geolocation software to comply with this requirement. Before playing for real money in an online casino, you’ll be required to download a plugin to your computer, or enable location services on your phone/tablet.

Registering with an NJ Online Casino

While you’ll need to be at least 21 years old and located in New Jersey to actually play – you can create, and fund an account from anywhere in the world. If you have a visit to the Garden State on the horizon, it’s a great time saver to set things up prior to arrival. That way, as soon as you cross the border you’ll be good to go.

Creating an account is a generally painless process. Customers will be asked to provide personal details, including:

  • Name
  • Address
  • Date of Birth
  • Last 4 Digits of your Social Security Number

All regulated online casino sites in the U.S. will require the last four digits of your SSN, regardless of the state. It serves as a final check to confirm that the other details you’ve provided, name, age, etc., are accurate. All of your data is kept in a completely safe, secure environment. You can submit your information with confidence.

NJ players will also need to choose a username and password, and provide a valid email address for the casino they’re registering with.

Last, be on the lookout for a designated promo code or bonus code field during the registration process. Consult the table on this page to make sure you’ve got the correct code and are getting the best bonuses possible.

Banking with New Jersey Online Casinos

Banking with New Jersey online casinos

How exactly do you deposit or withdraw money with NJ online casinos? It’s extremely easy, fast, and is one of the best parts about the regulated iGaming industry. Its important to note that not all online casinos will have the exact same banking options or payouts time, but generally speaking, they will all rely on at least a few of the following methods:

  • Credit Cards: Enter your CC info, press the button, and you’re good to go. Visa/MasterCard are standard – American Express and Discover are more of a rarity, but still available in the market.
  • ACH/e-check: ACH/e-check is extremely similar to an online bank transfer. The funds will come out of your account within 24-48 hours, just like a physical check would. Players will have the option to both deposit and withdraw using ACH/e-check, whereas online bank transfers only work one way.
  • Play+ Prepaid Card: Many online casinos have a tendency to reject credit or debit cards from making deposits. Play+ prepaid cards act as a middle man between the casino and the player, as users can simply upload funds to a Play+ card using their debit or credit card and then relay those funds from Play+ to their casino account. All players who activate their digital Play+ prepaid card will also receive a physical copy of the card in the mail that can be used for cash withdrawals at any ATM.
  • PayPal: PayPal is one of the most common methods to send cash over the internet, and can now be used to deposit with your online casino.
  • Skrill: You won’t find Skrill in every cashier, but it’s an excellent eWallet alternative to PayPal when available.
  • Bank Wires: It might take a little longer than some of the other methods, but bank wires are a reliable way to move your money, particularly larger sums, to an online casino.
  • Online Bank Transfers: Connect your bank account directly to the casino for quick deposits.
  • PayNearMe: Deposit with cash at participating retail stores throughout New Jersey like Family Dollar, CVS, 7Eleven, etc.
  • Casino Cage: One of the major benefits of regulated gaming in the U.S. is that you can deposit and withdraw from your account in-person, at the retail casino cage that is partnered with your online site.

When it comes time to withdraw, many of the options listed above (though not all) can be used to pull money off of an online casino site as well. Plus, most sites will offer the option to send out a paper check through the mail if that’s preferable.

Sharing Funds Between iGaming Products

Shared wallets are also a nice luxury for New Jersey gamers. If a site offers multiple products, its typically easy to transfer cash back and forth between them. For example, after depositing to DraftKings Casino you can use the same bankroll for casino, sports betting, and DFS contests on the site – it’s all connected.

NJ Casino Bonuses and Promo Codes

Let’s face it, for regular, non-whales, your favorite brick-and-mortar casino isn’t going to roll out the red carpet and front you a lucrative bonus to get you to the tables. That’s where the best NJ online casinos differ, and the crowded marketplace means sites lacking competitive offers are left in the dust. There are several types of NJ casino bonuses that you’re likely to see, each providing great value. Be sure to consult our table on this page for a complete list of the best available casino apps and online casino bonuses, each of which are offering a generous welcome bonus right now!

No-Deposit Bonus

A no-deposit bonus is the best kind of casino bonus. All that you have to do is create your account, use the right promo code, and they’ll start you off with some bonus money to use in the casino, no deposit required. It’s not going to be a life-changing sum, but you can do a lot with $10 – $30 bucks on the house.

Bonus Spins

Similar to the above, many casino apps and websites will opt to dish out bonus spins on online casino games to their new players. Brands may offer bonus spins as a no-deposit bonus or throw them in on top of an existing offer – it all depends on the operator. In any case, bonus spins allow players to play slots on the company’s dime, with any winnings typically paid out in the form of bonus funds.

First Deposit Bonuses

First deposit match bonuses are a very common component used to welcome new players. With these offers, the casino will award customers with a corresponding bonus based on their first deposit.

It will be listed with a percentage, and a max amount, for example: 100% up to $1,000. In that instance, the casino would award you with a bonus equal to 100% of your first deposit, up to a maximum of $1,000. Therefore a $1,000 deposit would unlock the full amount of the bonus. Always keep in mind that deposit match bonuses often come with hefty rollover requirements, typically ranging anywhere from 10x-25x.

Casino Refunds

Some New Jersey online casinos have elected to go with cash refunds, as opposed to a more traditional no-deposit or deposit match bonus. Cash refunds are just that – if you lose money from your initial deposit in the casino, you’ll receive a refund in bonus bucks.

Cash refunds typically have a time restriction, like 24 hours, where you can lose up to a certain amount, like $100. At the end of the set time period, if you’re still down money you will receive the listed refund, capped at the max amount.

Terms and Conditions

Be sure to keep an eye out for the terms and conditions of each bonus, as there is almost always a rollover requirement that will need to be met before the bonus funds are completely yours. You may have to wager the bonus dollars through once, or even several times.

With NJ’s casino bonuses, there may also be a game restrictions that can impact the value of the bonus to you personally. For example, if you prefer video poker or blackjack, but the bonus has to be cleared while playing slots, that choice may not be the best for you.

New Jersey Casino Regulations

The bill that officially legalized online casino gaming in New Jersey, A2578, gave every brick-and-mortar casino in the state a chance to apply for an online license. Once approved, licensees are then eligible to partner with, and host online-only skins, pending the approval of the DGE. Per law, all online casino operators in the state are required to pay the applicable taxes and fees.

NJ Online Casino Fees

To apply for a NJ online casino license you’re required to pay $100K. Once approved you’re on the hook for an additional $400K to purchase the license, which is actually pretty reasonable. By comparison, a similar license in Pennsylvania for slots, table games, and online poker will cost anywhere north of $1 million.

After getting set up, each year a $250K renewal fee is required. Plus, an additional $250K is due annually and is allotted to combatting problem gaming within the state.

NJ Online Casino Taxation

New Jersey taxes all of its online casinos at 15% of gross gaming revenue, which is a competitive rate within the industry. On top of that, 2.5% of gross gaming revenue will be attributed to the New Jersey Casino Reinvestment Development Authority.

The CRDA uses casino reinvestments to benefit residents around the state. For example, it has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in the Atlantic City community through neighborhood and housing development.

Enforcement

All New Jersey casinos, both retail and online, are maintained under the watchful eye of the Division of Gaming Enforcement. Its responsibilities include vetting new applicants and ensuring all available games are both safe, and fair. The DGE keeps the New Jersey iGaming market running and guarantees that all of the states licensed operators are up to code.

Responsible Gaming

New Jersey law requires all online casino sites to provide easily accessible information on responsible gaming. If you look at your online casino site, it won’t be hard to find. The state takes problem gambling seriously and is committed to providing its players with the support that they need. In addition, every year each casino operator is required to contribute $250,000 towards treatment programs.

Why Choose a Regulated NJ Online Casino?

There’s a ton of reasons to fire up your favorite online casino instead of visiting its retail partner.

  • Play anywhere. With a mobile casino, you can fire up your favorite games from anywhere in New Jersey. Your couch, the airport, the waiting room at the dentist, online casino games are available wherever you are.
  • Better Bonuses. With an online casino, you’ll be rewarded far more for your play than at a brick-and-mortar casino. Sign up bonuses, deposit reloads, bonus spins, cash refunds, and more are all available for New Jersey gamblers. Check the table above to make sure you’re getting maximum value for your play.
  • Play for less. Generally speaking, it’s hard to play for smaller amounts of money in a retail casino. Beyond penny slots, you’re likely to see betting minimums of at least $5, and sometimes even more. Online sites will spread the same games for cents on the dollar. Start with what you’re comfortable with.
  • Learn for free. NJ online casinos offer tons of play money options, allowing customers to test out games, absolutely free. Not sure how to play craps and too intimidated to try in-person? You can play online and learn the ropes at no cost.

New Jersey’s Gaming Tradition

Online Casino Gaming

New Jersey’s gambling history is firmly centered around an area that was once dubbed ‘The World’s Playground’ – Atlantic City. At one time a thriving beach resort, by the 1960s AC had declined substantially. Hotels were closing and tourism was drying up.

In the early 1970s, a plan was hatched to lean into the city’s history, regulate gambling, and revitalize the struggling town. Residents decisively voted down a proposal in 1974 over concerns with corruption and the mafia. Legislators tried again in 1976 with a concentrated PR effort to sway voters, which ultimately paid dividends.

On May 27, 1978, Resorts Atlantic City became the first casino to open its doors and start accepting legal bets. Resorts is still a fixture on the Atlantic City boardwalk today, using a roaring 20’s theme to honor the area’s gambling traditions, à la Boardwalk Empire.

Atlantic City exploded throughout the rest of the 70s and 80s with signs for Caesars, Bally’s, Sands, Harrah’s, Tropicana, Golden Nugget, and more soon lighting up the boardwalk. Games like blackjack, craps, roulette, and poker became commonplace throughout the city.

The Taj Mahal arrived in 1990 and set the pace for that decade, but eventually ceded its top spot to the Borgata which quickly became the gold standard in AC gaming after its grand opening in 2003.

Expanding online

It wasn’t until 2012 that New Jersey was able to gain traction with online gaming. A2578, the bill legalizing sports betting in the state, passed in both government chambers in December. It later arrived on the Governors desk on February 26th, 2013, and was promptly signed into law.

The first online casinos in the state officially began accepting action on November 26, 2013. Familiar faces like Borgata, Tropicana, Caesars, and Harrah’s, amongst a host of online-only operators, were there from day one.

After serving as a pioneer to regulated casino gaming and poker, New Jersey was also at the forefront of the push for sports betting in the United States. After years of challenges, Gov. Chris Christie’s persistence paid off. In May 2018, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act, the primary barrier between states and regulated sports betting. NJ online sportsbooks were live within a few months.
