Thursday College Football Slate

This week’s Thursday night college football lineup features two power-five matchups, two teams ranked in the top-25, and a handful of teams vying for bowl eligibility. Let’s jump into it.

Virginia Tech @ NC State on ESPN

  • Date: Thursday, October 27th, 2022
  • Start Time: 7:30 pm ET
  • Location: Carter-Finley Stadium, Raleigh, North Carolina
  • Participants: Virginia Tech Hokies (2-5) vs. NC State (5-2)
  • PointsBet Sportsbook Odds: NC State -13.5, O/U 39.5

It has been a rough go for head coach Brent Pry in his inaugural season in Blacksburg. The Hokies are just 2-5 heading into this matchup with one of the worst offenses in all of Power Five. And Vegas seems to agree. Despite a measly point total of 39.5, the Wolfpack are favored by nearly two touchdowns, implying a point total of just 13 for VaTech.

But there may be some hope for the Hokies – Virginia Tech has won in five consecutive matchups against the Wolfpack, including their last two in Raleigh.

Although NC State is ranked, they are running into some issues of its own. Coming off a brutal loss to Syracuse, head coach Dave Doeren decided to withhold the news that starting quarterback Devin Leary was out before last week’s kickoff. But NC State will be rolling with FCS transfer Jack Chambers as their starter for tonight’s showdown.

Can NC State get back on track with a convincing win, or can Virginia Tech continue its dominance in this series and pull off a stunner?

Louisiana @ Southern Mississippi on ESPN2

  • Date: Thursday, October 27th, 2022
  • Start Time: 7:30 pm ET
  • Location: M.M. Roberts Stadium, Hattiesburg, Mississippi
  • Participants: Louisiana (4-3) vs. Southern Mississippi (4-3)
  • PointsBet Sportsbook Odds: Louisiana -1, O/U 42

Thursday marks the first matchup between Louisiana and Southern Mississippi, where both schools are members of Conference-USA. Each squad is 4-3 and is looking to position itself closer towards bowl eligibility with a win.

The state of affairs looked dire for Louisiana after a 2-3 start, including two close losses to open up conference play with their starting quarterback being lost to injury. But in came backup Ben Woolridge, and the Ragin’ Cajuns seem to be right back on track with lopsided victories over Marshall and Arkansas State to get to .500 in conference play.

In Woolridge’s last two starts, he’s thrown for 546 yards, and seven touchdown passes without throwing an interception. If Woolridge can continue his high level of play, the Ragin’ Cajuns have to feel good about their chances.

Conversely, the Golden Eagles’ offense is nothing to write home about. The offense revolves around Frank Gore Jr., yes, that Frank Gore – he is the son of the future Hall-of-Fame running back. It has been the defense of Southern Miss. that has led them to victory in four of their past five contests. During this breakthrough, the Golden Eagles have only allowed over 20 points once in the past five games. It’ll be a classic battle of strength versus strength, making tonight’s CUSA matchup a must-watch.

Utah @ Washington St. on FS1

  • Date: Thursday, October 27th, 2022
  • Start Time: 10:00 pm ET
  • Location: Martin Stadium, Pullman, Washington
  • Participants: Utah (5-2) vs. Washington St. (4-3)
  • PointsBet Sportsbook Odds: Utah -7, O/U 55

To cap off the night, we will have a battle in Pullman, where each team is coming off their bye week. Utah will look to continue its dominance towards another Pac-12 title, while Washington State is more than capable of pulling off the home upset.

The Cougars will be led by Incarnate Word transfer Cameron Ward at quarterback. Although Wazzou isn’t lighting up the scoreboard like the Mike Leach days, Ward has thrown for nearly 2,000 yards in just seven starts. Ward has generated plenty of buzz in NFL circles and could be a sleeper in the NFL draft whenever he decides to declare.

The Utes have continued to build off last year’s miracle campaign towards their first-ever Pac-12 title. The Utes are 5-2, including an in-conference loss to UCLA, but a conference title appearance is still in the cards if they run the table. Quarterback Cam Rising has been one of the nation’s more dynamic dual-threat quarterbacks, throwing for 1,855 passing yards and rushing for 307 yards, totaling 21 touchdowns through seven starts.

Tonight has the makings of a potential shootout, explaining the high-point total.
