Roulette is played with a wheel head divided into 37 or 38 equal-sized compartments. These are numbered with zero, double zero, and then one through 36, though not in consecutive order. La Partage
This French term for sharing is not so coincidentally found in roulette’s French version. All European roulette wheels have only one zero, which is already quite advantageous for the player than the classic wheel. This reduces the house roulette odds down to just 2.7%. But on wheels with La Partage, the house gives you back half your bet on any even money wager, reducing the house edge down to 1.3%
Another similar rule called En Prison allows you to either take half your bet and lose the other half or leave it up for another spin where it must win again to either win or lose. This also has a house edge of only 1.3%. This makes the French roulette variants the best games you will likely find when playing real money roulette.
Welcome Bonus
These are casino bonuses awarded by online gambling sites to new players to entice them to make a deposit. Inside Bets
Roulette wagers are placed on the numbers themselves, such as straight up, corners, splits, streets, double streets, and pockets. These roulette bets are individual numbers or groups of individual numbers that can be bet on the inside of the roulette layout.
Outside Bets
Bets placed on even/odd, red/black, high/Low, the columns, or the dozens. Outside bets are bets that are placed not on individual numbers or groupings but on the outside of roulette game layouts.
Air-Ball Roulette
In both land-based and some online casinos, you may find a roulette wheel that is neither a live dealer nor an RNG roulette wheel. It is an automatic wheel that continues spinning, and a puff of air is used to blow the roulette ball out and around the track before it falls into a number. This is all done automatically. This gives a sense of the real game without the expense of an actual dealer and can allow real money roulette games to be played quickly in games like slingshot roulette.
Dolly
The dolly is the marker used to mark the point that has been spun. If you watch a live dealer closely, you will note that the dolly is always placed with the palm facing up to prevent the dealer from slipping chips on top of a bet, as it’s marked.
Basket Bet
The Basket is a bet on American Roulette games that covers the five numbers at the top of the roulette layout. This includes Zero, double zero, one, two, and three. This bet has an RTP of 92.1% and pays 6:1.
Courtesy line
If you want to bet the zero/ double zero split on the roulette wheel in a land-based roulette game, it is a stretch if you’re at the end of the table. So, in American Roulette, the line that separates the second twelve from the third twelve is referred to as the courtesy line and is the same as betting the zero’s split.
You should always take special care that you’re bet is clearly on this line and leaves no room for guessing if you were instead trying to bet one of the Dozens bets. While this isn’t an issue when you play online roulette, some online casinos still have this bet available.

There are literally dozens and dozens of roulette variations out there. Some are fun, some are just outlandish, and many more are just run-of-the-mill. American Roulette Games
American roulette divides the wheel into 38 numbers. Zero, double zero, and then the numbers 1- 36. Both zeros are green. There is no option for La Partage or En Prison. All the outside bets lose if a zero or double zero is rolled. You will also note that the American Wheel lacks many of the exotic bets seen on the Europen and French roulette wheels, like Tiers Du Cylindre or Orphelins En Cheval.
The odds on American Roulette are quite high because of the two zeros and the straight-up bets still only paying 35 to 1 despite there being 38 possible numbers. Interestingly, every bet other than the 5-number basket bet has the same RTP of 94.74%. The split pays 17 to 1, corners pay 8 to 1, streets pay 11 to 1, and double streets pay 5 to 1.
Bet black; your odds are the same as if you bet on a number straight up. If you bet the courtesy line, your RTP is still the same as if you bet the columns. Each bet pays differently, yet the house edge remains the same. The only bet that has a different RTP than all the others is the basket bet, which has a considerably worse house edge yet, at 7.9%
European Roulette Games
The European Roulette Wheel is divided into only 37 sections with one green zero. While neither the American nor the European roulette game lists the numbers in order around the wheel, it’s important to note that they are still in a different order from each other, though still alternating black to red.
The inside bets pay the same as American Roulette, but due to their only being 37 possible spins, the game has a much lower house edge of 2.7%. European roulette generally now means American-style roulette but on a single zero European-style wheelhead.
French Roulette Games
French roulette is no more confined to France than french fries. What we refer to as French roulette is played everywhere on the continent, from Monaco to Hamburg to Baden Baden. It uses the Europen wheel but adds some novel bets and either the En Prison or La Partage rule to make the outside bets particularly appealing.
While only some roulette sites offer the French Roulette game with the call bets or the racetrack on the layout, it hardly seems very Continental without it. While En Prison or La Partage do take the RTP up to 98.7% if you are betting on the outside numbers, the ability to bet the Orphans, Neighbors of Zero, or the Third of a Wheel will show you a side of roulette you’ve likely never seen before.
Mini Roulette Games
Mini Roulette is a game made for mobile apps, but that quickly caught on and can be played at almost all roulette online casinos. They shrank the wheel and the layout down to just 13 numbers with just one zero and the numbers one through twelve.
It’s a quick, fun little game you can see easily on your cell phone with a French-style La Partage rule in effect when the zero lands. In this version, you only lose half of your inside bets as well as your outside bets.
But due to the paytable of 11:1 on straight ups, 5:1 on splits, 3:1 on streets, and 2:1 on corners, the mini roulette game has a lower RTP of 96.15%, which is considerably better than American Roulette but several times worse than we could do on authentic French Roulette.
Multi-Ball Roulette
The internet has allowed a lot of things that aren’t for the mainstream to grow and thrive. I’m going to put multi-ball roulette firmly in that category. I want you to picture the dealer spinning not one ball but two or twelve or whatever, sort of like having 100 bingo cards playing simultaneously.
You can play as many hands of roulette in one spin of the wheel as you wish as multiple balls cascade down to denote winners. While only possible on RNG versions of roulette, it has remained stubbornly popular over the past years, persisting even after many people migrated to the live dealer versions of more classic games.
Multi-Wheel Roulette
Sensing an opportunity, online roulette casinos released multi-wheel roulette. This roulette variant allows you to bet on live dealer games or, much more frequently, the air-ball roulette versions at multiple tables at a time.
This is a version of the multi-ball roulette that, due to the impossibility of spinning eight balls at a time on a physical wheel head, instead lets you place the same bets on up to eight different tables using live-action wheel heads.
Many people disdain the RNG games and prefer the actual bouncing ball down the track. This variant gives them both real wheel heads and the ability to simultaneously place bets on multiple games.
Live Roulette Online
Of course, almost all of these roulette variants can be played with live dealers now. There is no need for RNG games when you can live stream real money roulette games right on your desktop or mobile.

Yet some of these stratagems became widely followed in their time.
Some of this can be traced to roulette being wildly popular with the European aristocracy, which was known to sometimes turn its back on science and logic when faced with competing claims from some Earl or Duke. Any quick study of these strategies’ proponents would show a history ripe with ruin rather than a gaggle of rich philosophers and mathematical savants.
There are essentially two different types of roulette strategies: the progressive and the nonprogressive. Both are represented below. But losing progressives or variations on that theme are the most common of all roulette strategies.
Andrucci Roulette Strategy
Often referred to as the hot streak strategy, this system calls for you to note down the last thirty spins, look for patterns, and bet those streaks. The Andrucci, when appropriately used, might have helped find wheels that weren’t level or wheel heads with problems that caused some numbers to hit more often than others several decades or even centuries ago. But today’s casinos spend much more time on maintenance and repair, intending to keep everything as random as possible. They also use tracking and computing of their own now, which makes the likelihood of finding a biased wheel today unlikely.
Nonetheless, you will often see roulette signs that list the last 20 or so numbers, and many of those signs now display hot numbers or sections of the wheel that have been hitting lately. That should probably be all you need to know: casinos aren’t frightened by the Andrucci strategy.
D’Alembert Strategy Online Roulette
This roulette system literally pioneered the term Gambler’s Fallacy. Jean Baptist D’almbet believed that if you had one coin flip of heads, the next flip was more likely to be tails in order to keep the odds at 50/50.
So he thought that a system of bets on near-even money wagers would work best if you added to your wager if you lost and pulled some back if you had a win. So, in a D’Alembert roulette system, you add one average wager to your bet if you lose and reduce it by one unit should you win.
The best that can be said of this system is that it is less aggressive than the Martingale and provides the user with a good money management tool that keeps bets reasonably low and doesn’t require a colossal starting bankroll. Plus, it’s dead simple to keep track of.
Fibonacci Strategy
We know what you’re thinking here. How can an 800-year-old Italian mathematician help me win at roulette? And as you might expect, the answer is complicated. Suffice it to say that the answer is a bit occult and esoteric.
But the Fibonacci Sequence is a simple enough concept. Each number after 1 is the sum of the two preceding numbers. So 1+0 is 1, and 1+1 is two, and so on, With the first few numbers looking like this: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13,21, 34 and so on.
Those espousing the Fibonacci strategy for roulette would have you bet the series of numbers as a losing progression on even money bets until you win; upon a win, you then go back two numbers in the sequence and begin the sequence from there. We suggest you bring a large bankroll and, if possible, a very sober accountant to keep track of this one.
Labouchere Roulette Strategy
The Labouchere roulette system is perfect for online roulette because you will need all that processor speed at your fingertips to figure out your bets. First, decide how much you want to win. Which honestly is excellent advice for any casino game.
But now, for the fun part, we will take this target win and divide it into seven through ten smaller numbers, which total our goal. So far, so good. We will write these down randomly and bet the sum of the two outside numbers. But wait, it gets better.
If we win, we get to scratch out the two outside numbers, which is oddly satisfying, but if we lose, we take the sum of our loss and stick it on the end of our little sequence. Start to lose a few hands, and you’ll need a longer piece of paper.
Plus, as a negative progression, it only takes a short time for all those losing bets to get added to the outside before we could get close to table max, which will put a quick end to our plans.
Martingale Strategy Roulette Online
The Martingale is a renowned strategy for all casino wagers among gamblers worldwide, or at least among those who’ve survived it. It is a pure negative progression, lose and you double your wager, win then begin again. The core concept here is that on even money bets, you’re bound to have a winner eventually. And, of course, the takeaway from many gamblers is that the roulette wheel can remain insolent long after you become insolvent.
With a $5 bet, by the time you reach 17 losses, you are well over a million dollars at risk to win back just your original wager.
