Let’s start with a clarification: single-game and same game parlays are the same thing. We will use the two terms interchangeably. Some sportsbooks call them single-game and some say same game. How do single game parlays work?
So what exactly is a single game parlay? Well, a plain old parlay is a bet comprised of two or more “legs,” all of which must “hit,” or win, in order to win the bet. So let’s say you take a look at the week’s NFL schedule and see three bets you want to make. You have a few choices. You can make three individual bets, so you will either win zero, one, two, or all three of them. You can make a three-team teaser, in which you move the spread or the total down or up to become more favorable (+2 moved up to +8 on a standard 6-point teaser). This reduces the payout but is more favorable, and thus, theoretically more likely to win. Still, you have to hit all three legs for your bet to win.
The third option is to put all three bets together into a three-item parlay. A standard three-leg parlay with odds of -110 will pay out around +600, or 6/1. So if you bet $10, you will win $60 if your parlay hits. High risk, high reward.
Now imagine a circumstance where you are still placing a multi-leg parlay, but every result is contingent on the same game. For example, if you’re sitting down to watch the Lakers play the Heat in primetime, you could take a combination of wagers like Lakers moneyline, Anthony Davis over 25.5 points, and Jimmy Butler under 22.5 points for a three-leg one-game parlay. The sportsbook will automatically calculate the odds, all the bettor has to do is confirm the amount of the wager. Same game parlays are popular in part because they generate multiple rooting interests, enhancing the excitement around a single, individual contest.
Example of a single game parlay
Let’s say the Saints are getting ready to take on the Seahawks in a Monday night NFL game. For this example, we will use the projected over/under rushing totals listed for Saints RB Alvin Kamara (92.5 yards) and Seahawks RB Alex Collins (46.5 yards) as a baseline to compare and contrast the NFL single game parlay options available at three leading sportsbook mobile apps.
DraftKings single game parlays
Player props on DraftKings are available as both regular wagers and same game parlay wagers, but they are priced differently. The same game parlay over/under rushing total options are listed in increments of 10, and they are not priced individually. So for Kamara, you can get him over/under 94.5 but DraftKings doesn’t tell you what the price of that wager is until you pair it with another wager. If you pair it with the over 49.5 yards rushing total for Alex Collins, the Seahawks’ likely leading rusher, you are looking at a payout of +400. If you want the over, you have to take a few extra yards, but the payout seems pretty good. Let’s see how it compares to other sportsbooks.
BetMGM one game parlays
BetMGM also offers one game parlays, as it calls them. Similar to DraftKings, not every bet on the board is available for a one game parlay. The sportsbook pre-selects the available wagers, most of which are related to players scoring first, game totals, and other statistics. The Kamara-Collins parlay we are using as an example is also available, but it is a little different than DraftKings. On BetMGM, the yards are also broken down by increments of 10, but you can only have 40+ or 50+ for Collins and 85+ or 95+ for Kamara. So if we parlay Collins 50+ and Kamara 95+, the yards are higher than the baseline O/U, but the payout is a solid +375, which is close to DK but still a little less than we would like, particularly because, unlike DraftKings, the Under is not available at all. It’s Over or nothing.
BetRivers same game parlays
BetRivers does things a little differently too, in a way that benefits the bettor. If you see two or more bets you like in a featured game, you can automatically combine them into a same game parlay in the betslip. This is much easier and allows you to wager on the number you want rather than having to take a higher number. In the case of our example, Alvin Kamara is right there at 92.5, Over or Under, along with Alex Collins at 45.5 yards, which is actually a yard lower than DraftKings. Put the two bets in your betslip, click on the Parlay button, and you immediately get a +325 price, which is lower than DK or MGM but also lines up with the yards listed in the baseline example. Switch the bet to Under and you get +310. BetRivers definitely offers the best user experience of the three.
Summary
Each sportsbook offers most of the same single game parlay wagering options, particularly for high-profile events like NFL games, but the pricing and structure are different. This is why it pays to shop around to find the most value for any bet you want to make. If you’re willing to shift the results, in this case a higher number for yards rushed, you can get a higher payout. If you want to take the higher number and go under instead of over, you can do that too for a lower payout. It all depends on your handicapping strategy and risk tolerance.
Sportsbooks offering single game parlays
With all the buzz surrounding one game parlays, the option is still not offered by every sportsbook. Some sportsbooks add popular betting options quicker than others, and every sportsbook designs its offerings differently. That said, it makes sense for every sportsbook to offer same game parlays because the house “hold,” or win percentage, is much higher than for single game wagering. That said, we went through 20 of the biggest sportsbooks to determine whether they offer same game parlay betting. Here is what we found:

Analysis
As you can see above, most sportsbooks offer some sort of same game parlay option. Digging a bit deeper, most of those that do not have same game parlays are smaller and may not have the budget to build out the internal pricing structure. The sportsbooks that do offer same game parlays are companies that spend a lot on marketing and sponsorships and are the more popular operators in states across the country.
We expect this sort of situation to play out as single game parlay betting continues to grow. Not every sportsbook will end up offering these parlays because the smaller operators may not want to manage the risk, but the bigger operators that are active on social media and generally chase the next big thing in sports betting will be there, actively promoting single game parlays as a fun option for bettors.
Single game parlays by sport
Sadly, single game parlays are not available for every sport. Those who want to parlay Top Batsman and Top Bowler for India in the T20 Cricket World Cup are unfortunately out of luck. Sportsbooks limit single game parlays to mainstream sports, including:
- MLB
- NBA
- NCAA Football (Many states do not allow player props for NCAA sports. Same game parlays for NCAA football are related to the outcome of the game)
- NCAA Basketball
- NFL
- NHL
- Soccer (All major leagues, including English Premier League, La Liga, and MLS)
Interest in single game parlays among sportsbooks and bettors
We know what a single game parlay is, which sportsbooks offer it, and which sports are available. All good information, but how popular are single game wagers, really? Does all this information matter if single game parlays fade from popularity after a year or two? After all, what is popular on Twitter isn’t necessarily popular in the rest of the world. Based on anecdotal evidence and limited financial data from a few sportsbooks, reporters at our partner site, SportsHandle, have determined that same game parlays are VERY popular.
A representative for FanDuel told SportsHandle’s Jeff Edelstein that nearly half of all bettors on the site who have wagered on an NFL game in 2021 also put a few bucks down on at least one single game parlay. Not only that, but single game parlays comprised nearly 20% of all NFL bets on FanDuel. That is a remarkable feat, considering that they didn’t even exist three years ago. FanDuel generates hundreds of millions of dollars in sports betting revenue each year, so 20 percent of the NFL handle is a lot of revenue. This statistic shows that single game parlays are profitable for sportsbooks and, therefore, are definitely here to stay.
More about single game parlays
Parlays have always been popular, so it makes sense that same game parlays would also become popular. There’s a reason why lotteries are offered in 48 states – people have an intense desire to try and turn a little money into a lot of money. That’s mostly what a parlay is – if you get lucky enough to hit a bunch of picks, you turn a few bucks into hundreds or even thousands of dollars. These big payouts make headlines, but what you don’t read about is how many parlays end up coming up short. A 10-leg parlay pays out at 642/1, or $6420 on a $10 bet using standard -110 odds, but has a .1% (1000/1) true probability of winning. So you could win $6420 if you hit a $10, 10-leg parlay, but it would statistically take 1000 different 10-leg wagers to win the bet, which would cost you $10,000.
We at USBets love a good parlay as much as the next bettor, but we want you to have the facts so you can make your own decision about whether same game parlays are a good betting strategy. If you’re trying to make money long term, parlays are not a good strategy, but most people don’t bet on sports as a profession. They bet for fun, and parlays are unquestionably fun.
