TwinSpires, owned and operated by Churchill Downs, Inc. (CDI), is a large company that is new to sports betting but not new to gambling. TwinSpires is named after the iconic double-spired grandstand at Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby. As such, it started in 2007 as an online horse racing betting platform. Of course, sports betting, both online and in-person, has become immensely popular since being legalized in 2018, so it makes sense that TwinSpires would extend its platform to include sports betting.
We’ve taken TwinSpires for a test drive and have the answers to your questions. Did CDI use its extensive mobile app expertise to create a moving and memorable sports betting app? Is TwinSpires worth your time and space on your phone for sports betting or just horse racing? What promotions do they offer? Where can you wager with TwinSpires? What is the user experience like? What bets can you make on TwinSpires? Read on for more information and a full review of the TwinSpires betting platform.
Let’s start with the promotions. People often sign up with a particular operator because of the new customer sportsbook bonuses. TwinSpires offers a solid promotion that is more generous than most of the competition. How does a $1000 risk-free bet sound? Pretty good, eh? Let’s go over how to claim this great offer.

|Welcome Bonus||Risk-Free Bet up to $1000|
|Bonus Valid||October 2021|
The $1000 free bet is the most generous promotion offered by TwinSpires, but it is far from the only one available to new and existing customers. Other promotions include:
Signing up for a TwinSpires is so easy. Let’s go over the steps required to get your account up and running.
Your account is set up. Now you need to make a deposit. Here are all the banking options that are available to fund your TwinSpires account. Options may vary by state.
|State||Casino Partner||Launch Date|
|Colorado||Bronco Billy’s Casino||April 2021|
|Indiana||Rising Star Casino Resort||April 2021|
|Michigan||Island Resort & Casino||January 2021|
|Pennsylvania||Presque Isle Downs & Casino||April 2021|
|Arizona||Tonto Apache Nation||TBA|
|Louisiana (est.)||Fairgrounds Race Course||TBA|
|Maine (est.)||Oxford Casino||TBA|
|Maryland (est.)||Ocean Downs||TBA|
CDI has been in Colorado for a while, operating under the former BetAmerica brand. The company re-introduced itself to the state in April 2021, bringing the TwinSpires online sportsbook to the state along with a retail sportsbook at Bronco Billy’s Casino in Cripple Creek.
TwinSpires is live online in Indiana through its partnership with the Rising Star Casino. In Indiana, each casino is allowed to have three different online “skins” or partners. TwinSpires chose Rising Star, and the partnership also includes a retail sportsbook at the casino.
TwinSpires offers both an online sportsbook and online casino in Michigan through its partnership with the Island Resort & Casino in Harris, MI. Betting kiosks are also available at the casino location for those wanting to bet in-person.
TwinSpires purchased Presque Isle Downs horse track in Erie, PA, in January 2019, just four months before the first online sports bet was placed in the state. This was some great timing, because it led to TwinSpires entering the Pennsylvania market as BetAmerica, the previous name of its sportsbook product. TwinSpires has had some success in PA, growing steadily as the market matures.
The Volunteer State has no retail casinos, or horse tracks for that matter, so all the sportsbooks operating in Tennessee are online-only. TwinSpires is based in neighboring Kentucky, so it made sense that the company would expand southward, as it did in January 2021.
TwinSpires is not available online in Mississippi because the state does not allow online betting. However, Mississippi was one of the first states to legalize retail sports betting, and sports betting operators have set up shop at the state’s many casinos. TwinSpires operates two retail sportsbooks in Mississippi, both of which are located within casinos owned by CDI.
TwinSpires recently partnered with the Tonto-Apache Tribe to bring its online sportsbook to Arizona. The tribe has an existing casino and qualifies for a sports betting license, so TwinSpires is expected to go live in AZ any day now. We’ll let you know.
Voters approved and the legislature legalized sports betting in Maryland, so we know it’s coming sometime in late 2021. CDI owns Ocean Downs, a horse track and casino near Ocean City, MD. Putting 2 and 2 together, TwinSpires is a sure thing to go live in Maryland at some point, but likely not before early 2022.
CDI owns Fairgrounds Race Course, a famous horse track in New Orleans. The state of Louisiana recently legalized sports betting, which will be live in early 2022. See how this works? TwinSpires is likely to be in Louisiana at some point in 2022 due to its existing presence in the state.
CDI owns Miami Valley Gaming, a horse track and casino right outside of Cincinnati. Ohio legislators have been debating whether to legalize sports betting for several years now, but they are expected to eventually vote to legalize, at which point TwinSpires will be well-positioned to go live in the state due to its casino location.
You think we’re done? We’re not done. CDI owns the Oxford Casino in Oxford, Maine, one of only two retail casinos in the entire state. If/when sports betting comes to Maine, TwinSpires will be there, particularly if there is a tethering requirement, something that has been advocated for by many in the state legislature.
Ok, now we’re done. Illinois already has a robust, competitive sports betting marketplace, but it stands to reason that TwinSpires will someday join the party in the Land of Lincoln due to, you guessed it, a CDI-owned casino in the state. TwinSpires owns Arlington Park, a world-famous horse track outside of Chicago. CDI also owns Rivers Casino Des Plaines, which features a BetRivers sportsbook. The quirk of CDI owning both TwinSpires and a competitor-branded casino may be why they haven’t taken TS to Illinois. Regardless, Illinois is too big of a market to ignore, so keep an eye on TwinSpires coming to the state at some point down the line.
We’ve covered a lot of ground here in our TwinSpires review, but we haven’t talked yet about the actual product you will be using. Is the app and browser version worth your time and money? The answer is yes, you should sign up for TwinSpires. Not just because we recommend it, but because it is a solid product with plenty of promotions and incentives to keep your interest. Let’s start with the browser version of TwinSpires before moving on to the far more popular app version.
The browser is pretty straightforward. Top sports are displayed in a row as buttons across the top of the page. Promos are prominently featured, also in a row across the middle of the page. Below all that are the day’s upcoming events. One mildly irritating part of the layout is the bet slip section that takes up at least a quarter of the home page. Even if the bet slip is empty, it’s still there, cramming the rest of the content and layout into a smaller space. It would be nice if the betslip was hidden until the user clicked on the bets they wanted to make. That is a small nitpick, however. In general, the website is easy to navigate and offers competitive lines and lots of different betting options.
The prices are competitive on TwinSpires because the company has partnered with Kambi, a leading sportsbook technology provider. Kambi manages the pricing for several prominent sportsbooks, which is good because you can be assured that you are getting some of the best prices in the market, but it’s also not as good because it becomes harder to find value since all the prices are so similar across multiple sportsbooks.
The TwinSpires mobile sportsbook app is almost exactly the same as the browser version. The only discernible difference is the bet slip conveniently staying out of sight until a wager is made, and then it pops up at the bottom of the phone. Very intuitive. Other than that, it’s all the same. The same promo banners are at the top of the page. The same upcoming events are below, just like on the home page. There is a row of popular options at the bottom of the page that includes live bets, all available sports, upcoming sports, and a betslip. All in all this is a very nice app that has everything you need to bet on sports from the comfort of your couch.
The browser and app are easy to use, but what about the actual wagers available to bet on? What is included? The better question is what isn’t included. TwinSpires has it all! Practically any sport played anywhere in the world is available on TwinSpires. The actual list of sports available to bet on depends on which state you live in, but wherever you are you won’t have any shortage of wagering opportunities. Here is a list of all the major sports offered:
All the regular bet types are available on TwinSpires, but one feature that stands out is the Teaser+ slider. It’s an innovative way to display all the alternate lines available for a game. You can just slide the button back and forth to see all the different point spread prices. Of course, you can see them listed in a list as well, but the slider is a good example of TwinSpires being creative and finding ways to make their bet types and prices easier to access and understand. Here are the bet types available on TwinSpires:
We all have questions. What is the current temperature in Denver? How much does a jaguar weigh? Are there mosquitoes in Antarctica? Why is it still called a toll-free number when all numbers are technically toll-free? TwinSpires might not be able to help you with those questions, but if you have any questions about their sportsbook, rest assured that they will all be answered.
TwinSpires has more than the usual number of ways to solve customer problems. Online chat is becoming table stakes in the sportsbook customer service game, and TwinSpires offers a great chat function, available 24/7 on both the browser and app. A toll-free number is also available if you prefer to speak to customer service representatives over the phone. If you really want to get specific and explain your question in detail in an email, have at it. Someone is manning the TwinSpires computer, ready to answer your email.
Use TwinSpires promo code USBETS to claim the best bonus offer. This offer consists of a $1000 risk-free bet. After making your first deposit, if your very first bet doesn’t win, TwinSpires will credit your account the same amount, up to $1000. Doesn’t get much more risk-free than that. TwinSpires also offers promotions such as profit boosts, parlay insurance, and free bets (usually about $10) on major sports like the NFL.
TwinSpires is currently live online in five states (Colorado, Indiana, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee) and retail-only in Mississippi. We expect that list to grow in 2022 as sports betting becomes legal in states where TwinSpires owns gaming properties, including Louisiana, Maryland, and Maine.
